What We Treat

Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves of the body, particularly those of the spine. Treatment consists of a wide range of manipulative techniques designed to improve the function of the joints, relieving pain and muscle spasm.
Common conditions that often respond well to treatment include:

Neck, Shoulder and Arm pain

The cervical spine in the neck is the most vulnerable part of the spinal column, largely due to its great mobility and the weight of the head that it supports. Over many years our necks are subjected to a great deal of stress and minor injuries, which can result in aches and pain not only in the neck but also in the shoulder and the arm.   Activities such as using a computer, driving for long periods of time and repetitive work all take their toll on the healthy functioning of the neck. The nerves that exit from your neck go to supply the shoulder, arm and hand, so often the first symptom of a neck problem will be pain or pins and needles in one of these areas.
If you have pain in the neck, shoulder or arm, a chiropractor will perform a thorough examination of the affected area but also of the neck to identify if the spine is the source of the trouble. If a problem is found in the neck then the true cause of the problem will be treated, unlike painkilling medication which only addresses the symptoms.

The most common forms of headache are cervicogenic, that is stemming from a cause in the neck.  They frequently arise due to stress and involve the head, neck and shoulders. Chiropractic can help restore the function of the cervical spine, and relax the tight muscles thereby easing these tension headaches.
Migraine is a more serious type of headache which is often one sided, a lot more painful and frequently has symptoms such as nausea and an inability to tolerate light or noise. Some types of migraine are a result of disorders of the cervical spine and can respond well to chiropractic treatment.

Sports Injuries

Sports people both amateur and professional are prone to injuries due to overuse, poor training techniques, and repetitive strains.  These stresses can result in loss of normal spinal function and predisposition to further injuries. This can have a major detrimental effect on sporting abilities, a fact understood by many professional sports people, who attend chiropractic clinics regularly not only for injuries but also to enhance their performance. In our clinics we see many sportsmen and women, and through selective use of the treatments available to us, often including specific exercise programs tailor made for each individual, we are able to help improve their abilities.

Low Back Pain

Low back pain is extremely common and can vary from a slight ache to excruciating pain. It is one of the biggest causes of people taking time off work, costing the economy a fortune in medical and state resources every year.

Chiropractic has been shown to be very effective at relieving back pain, and it is the condition that Chiropractors see most frequently in their clinics.

Chiropractors are highly trained to diagnose the exact cause of back pain and devise effective treatment plans not only to relieve the symptoms, but also to stabilize the problem thereby helping to ensure that the problem does not reoccur.

Sciatica is caused by the sciatic nerve in the back being pinched resulting in pain shooting down the back of the leg. The symptoms can vary from bad pain to numbness or just a heavy leg feeling.  It is often caused by a spinal disc protruding and pressing on the nerve, though there are several other possible causes of this condition.

This is a condition that we commonly see in the clinic, and get good results treating, often eliminating the need for costly and unnecessary back surgery.

Arthritis means inflammation of a joint, and there are many possible causes of this. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis which is a wear and tear type of disorder, and to a certain degree is a natural part of the aging process. Though this is not a condition that can be reversed, chiropractic treatment aimed at gently mobilizing stiffened joints can give good symptomatic improvement and help slow down the degenerative process.

Whiplash type Injuries

This is a general term to describe any neck injury where the neck has undergone a forcible flexion or extension.  Frequently symptoms of this type of injury do not appear until many months after the injury.  Common symptoms of a whiplash injury are neck pain, headaches, arm pain, poor concentration and fatigue. Chiropractic treatment is effective at helping to restore normal function to damaged intervertebral joints, and thereby aid in speed up a full recovery.
